Method 1 – PVC Bow
- Collecting the materials
We could use many tools from the article of how to make wood bows. Make sure that you use the correct safety precautions. This is the list of recommended tools:
- PVC pipe: 160 cm of 1.9 cm
- PVC pipe: 30 cm of 2.5 cm
- PVC pipe: 10 cm of 1.3 cm
- PVC end caps: 10 cm (optional)
- Tape measure
- Electrical tape
- Rubber mallet
Cutting the pipes
When the PVC pipes you bought are not the fiberglass type, then they are needed to be cut. Cut the main bow by a multitool saw or a pipe cutter to 62 inches long. Cut two 4 inches or 0.5 inches and one 12 inches of 1 inch PVC fiberglass.
Combining the pipes.
Insert a 4-inch pipe to the main pipe. Hammer it using a mallet. Use a strong force because it might be a little tight. Move it all through till when the tops are flush enough at the ends. Apply the same work to the second four-inch pipe in the opposite direction when the first end is done.
Creating hand grip.
First, cut the one-inch pipe down to the middle. This attachment will make you move it on the main pipe. Use the tape to attach your main bow. Overlap the tape and make the layer sturdier.
Flip the cut you made on side outside away from the position of the string. This is crucial as when bending the bow, your cut might close or open. If you make the cut facing on the other side, it might rip your tape or pinch the fingers.
Cutting the parachute cord
You need 62 inches of parachute cord to tie on the bow. It will have a few inches of cord longer than the length you actually need. But when you tie your parachute cord on the bow, you lose some cord length. Cut the parachute cord carefully straights with sharp scissors.
Next, seal the ends off with the flame. You could use a match or a lighter to burn both ends of the parachute cord lightly to keep them from fraying.
Making the groove
Use a saw or a hacksaw to cut the 0.5-inch groove sitting at the angle of 70 degrees. Point the groove to the bow back so that when they are pulled they will go the same direction. The angle will help the parachute cord to stay secured and the 0.5-inch groove will allow the parachute cord to fit and not slip.
Tying the Knot
Start with one end. Secure the firm knot, bring a string to the others then tie the second knot. There will be enough force on your string so that you could pull them with the finger and then they will snap backward.
Placing the caps
To protect your parachute cord on the ends and finish the bow’s look, consider having a PVC cap. A 4-inch cap will fit on each end. Don’t use the glue because you might want to remove them later easily when the string breaks or when restringing the bow.
Use spray paint when you decorate the bow with colors. Put the bow on a cardboard piece outside, spray to the bow directly. Make sure that the parachute cord and caps are removed before you paint to make the paint fully dry.
